Printed on chain laid paper manufactured by George Wilmot at his mill in Shoreham in Kent . Shoreham was the location where many of Palmer's spectacular artworks were sketched and painted. The paper is counter marked with the date - 1846 and has a glazed surface which is very hard , very smooth and very shiny . In his 1841 treatise Robert Hunt recommended a Satin post, Double Glazed by J Whatman Turkey Mill for his direct positive process . The glazing process was achieved by the use of  pressing rollers  . On the British Museum website he is listed as being at this address between 1839 and 1846. A light hearted commentary on the summer of 1835. This led me to press a few buttons (no real research) and the "London Wiki" which is collating  the London Robsons street directory has John Betts at this address in 1832. But no trade is given . In the 1842 directory of the same name he is described as a bookseller at this address.  I couldn't find another source for the directory so that I could verify that information so I did a search on Abe books , no luck with the directory but I found a map for sale by John Betts with his Compton street adress on it with the words "Spain and Portugal on a large scale will be published on 31st Dec 1838. So the British Museum website is definitely incorrect. To compound this gamesboard.org.uk  state that he was a prolific maker of games and was at 7 Compton Street from about 1827. Writing paper with the watermark of J Whatman was handmade from the vey best linen rags by the most skilled papermakers and was probaly the best paper ever made.  In 1829 the Turkey Mill which was situated in Maidstone in Kent was run by the Hollingworth Brothers  who had bought the Mill from James Whatman in 1794.</p> <p>The luxurious covers of the this album were filled by this the  Rolls Royce of paper , and the pages were all edged with gold gilt . </p> <p>The whole package is of the highest quality.</p> <p>This paper still works well with the Calotype even though it is 195 years old. As you can see from the adjoining images  it came  with a tissue guard and the reverse is indented . Doing a quick internet search there is an almost identical engraving described as being circa 1800 but without knowing the original source I am  not sure how reliable that is . The shading of the sky and on the Tudor chimney beside the tower are absent in this version . Often on engravings both the name of the artist and the name of the engraver are given but in this case they are absent. John Betts is sometimes described as an engraver . It would make sense if he did this to order . Which is quite something . We shall conclude therefore that the hyposulphite of soda properly used , has not the injurious properties attributed to it.” Apart from environmental factors .Two of the causes of deterioration in the salt print are insufficient washing after the fixing procedure , leaving traces of silver thiosulphate in the paper , the print will fade as a result .
